Had a discussion today about the jump rope I had once (see: Tangible/intuitive feedback, as illustrated by my broken jump rope), noting that "when it finally broke it was the most beautiful sense of accomplishment." 

That's one reason I love the notion of patina; here's another: the past 2 decades or so we've been trying to make objects [temporarily] "perfect." See below, keeping your iPhone and the camera above in mind.
