One of my favorite characteristics of definition is that it only exists as an emergent property of limitation. 

That is to say: the more inclusive a definition is, the less it is a definition of anything. 

Or to bring this from the abstract: The more people who count as 'felons,' the less meaningful the concept of 'felony' is.
